  • This field trip is part of our continuing effort to learn from other communities.  We will be visiting Kalaheo, Lawai, Omao Koloa, and Poipu and meeting with community leaders to understand their community issues, initiatives, development proposals, impacts and changing demographics.
    We will have special guides to share the inside stories on Kaneiolouma Heiau, Mahaulepu and Makauwahi Cave overlook. Other stops are Kukuiula Small Boat Harbor, Koloa Town, and drive through Kukuiula exclusive community.

  • Field Trip – Hanapēpē and ʻEleʻele
  • Itinerary: Hanapēpē Valley up to or beyond the crossing; Glass Beach and Port Allen Cemetery; Puolo Point and Salt Pond.

November 17, 2015  ~  6pm – 8pm

  • Update on upcoming events
  • Review of and prepare comments on the proposed land use maps and public access maps for Hanapēpē and ʻEleʻele prepared by Opticos at the County Planning Department-sponsored presentation on Nov. 4.( If maps are not ready for public comment) Resume discussion on by-laws for a community association, including analyzing the by-laws of existing organizations

November 10, 2015  ~  6pm – 8pm

  • Review last Saturday’s field trip to learn from community leaders at Kilauea, Hanalei, and Waipa
  • Discuss if we want to do another field trip by the end of the year
  • Discuss an idea suggested by County Civil Defense that Hanapēpē-ʻEleʻele community consider getting involved in the Army National Guard’s Hawaii Hazards Awareness and Resilience Program (HHARP).  If we are interested, the Army National Guard is offering to bring the HHARP lead from the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency (formerly known as State Civil Defense) to meet with us.  Here is the link to the program: http://www.scd.hawaii.gov/hharp.htm

November 7, 2015 (Saturday)  ~ 8am – 5pm

  • Full-day bus trip, starting at 8:00 am and returning at 5:00 pm.
  • Itinerary:  KILAUEA  ~  HANALEI  ~  WAIPA
  • Mahalo to UH Manoa, Hawai’inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge LAMA program for sponsoring bus transportation.

October 20, 2015  ~  6pm – 8pm

  • Finalize itinerary and arrangements for charter bus trip to north shore on Saturday, Nov. 7, to visit with and learn from community members.  This is the first of several field trips to other communities we are planning in the coming months. Costs to be finalized.  Open to all of you from this area who would like to join.  Full day.  Limited seating.  More details coming soon by email.
  • Preparation for County of Kauaʻi’s Nov. 2 and 4 General Plan Update meetings/walk/bus tour of Hanapēpē-ʻEleʻele

October 13, 2015  ~  6pm – 8pm

  • Prepare for early November public meeting by Planning Department on General Plan Update
  • Decide date and logistics of around-the-island field trip–to understand the planning issues/opportunities/lessons at different locations (Hanapēpē to Hanalei/Haena)

October 4, 2015  ~  6pm – 8pm

  • Review where we are in terms of activities, priorities, and upcoming schedule
  • Review findings from last week’s panel on culture and history of our area, and identifying our interests/priorities for culture and history
  • Complete comments to the Kauaʻi Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Commission
  • Complete comments to Highways on Replacement/renovation of main Hanapepe Bridge on Kaumualii Highway
  • Report out of Saturday’s community coastal disaster resiliency training conducted by UH and FEMA.
  • Planning for upcoming field trip to other communities
